THE MINISTERS COUNCIL OF RHODE ISLAND
2010-2011 Annual Report
The Ministers Council program year, as usual, began in May with our annual retreat on Block Island. Our retreat coordinator, Rev. Toni Di Pina, did a wonderful job of planning for a relaxing retreat. Our guest speaker was Rev. Dr. Kirk Jones from Andover Newton and author of the book, Addicted to Hurry, which he used as the basis for our devotions and discussion. In our closing service we bid Rev. Hank and Fran Pedersen goodbye, as they prepared to move to Minnesota. Little did we know that for many of us it would be the last time we would see Hank as he passed away just a few weeks later.
The Ministers Council Executive Board worked very hard creating “Guidelines for Clergy Compensation”. These guidelines have been distributed to all clergy and are available to churches as well. (See the report from the Pastoral Leadership Ministry Team.)
Our October conference was held on October 26, with Jean Wright as our guest speaker. It was a day for reflection and relaxation and was well attended.
Unfortunately, our January program with Rev. Dr. Evan Howard had to be cancelled due to snow. But February was a big success at Warwick Central Baptist Church with Rev. John Houlker speaking about postmodern Christian Education. In March, the ministers were introduced to our new staff member for fund development and marketing person, Rev. Dr Johnny Wilson, Jr., as well as our existing staff.
Our new officers for 2011-2012 are: Rev. Dr. D. Paul Lawrence as vice president; Rev. Barbara DaCosta as senator; Rev. Bob Auld as program chair. A change in our by-laws was decided by our executive board and the Standing Committee on Ordained Ministry to reduce the number of Ministers Council representatives on SCOM.
The Ministers Council is trying to become more user-friendly by sharing material that is relevant to today’s pastors.
